Just over two years ago, Ilkley Moor became one of the first Medical
Practices in the country to form their own Patients Council.
The Council consists of twelve voluntary patient members, and meets
regularly along with Practice Staff representatives and General
Practitioners.
The purpose of The Council is to support Staff in their efforts to
provide a continually better quality and more responsive level of
service to all patients in this very busy practice. This co-operation
enables information sharing by breaking down any barriers to effective
communication, and will hopefully contribute to greater local ownership
of health and social care services. It will also help to provide a
better understanding of why and how services need to change and develop
for the future.
During the past two years a number of issues have been addressed and
include the general set-up of the waiting room, the provision of a
Practice “Suggestion Book” and the provision of computer access to
enable diabetes sufferers to view information about their ailment. It is
hoped that this service can be extended to provide information on other
illnesses in the future. The Council have also approached the Airedale
Primary Care Trust in an effort to improve the level of service provided
in the Warfarin Clinic, and set up a special “Carers” committee to
provide information on the services available. Discussions regarding
“Out of hours service” have taken place, and future subjects for
consideration include Practice Based Commissioning and The Coronation
Hospital development.
The Council are interested to hear from any patient of The Ilkley Moor
Practice who maybe prepared to serve as a Patients Representative. If
you can offer time, user experience, insider knowledge of disease or
other wide-ranging skills, please contact The Council Chairman at
Springs Medical Centre.
